Late summer 2007 was hardly short of chess events, but the one which topped all others was the World Chess Championships in Mexico City. In 2007 the latter took the form of a double round all play all, similar to what had happened in 2005.
Since 1993, when Kasparov and Short played their title match outwith FIDE, the chess world was, as far as world championships were concerned, split in two. Formal unity was restored as a result of the title match between Topalov and Kramnik – which was won by Kramnik. The new version (WCh as a tournament) had been agreed as a result of the WCh tournament in San Luis. After it, FIDE changed its plans and settled on the traditional match as a way of deciding the world championship.
Although it ended just before our publishing date, you can find in this issue the WCh games with extensive annotations. Viswanathan Anand won the double-round tournament in majestic fashion. None of the other players, not even Kramnik, could threaten the Indian, who previously had moved to number one in the Elo listings.
Also in this issue:
The games from the Biel Chess Festival, which took place for the 40th time this year, and those from the international match between Russia and China. And a report of a high level tournament in Carlsbad.
Daniel King: Move by Move In Daniel King’s column, every move for one side is provided with a training question from a certain point on. All plausible replies are taken into account and awarded points and or provided with feedback. For CBM 120 King has selected the game Gagunashvili-Jobava, Tbilisi 2007.
Oliver Reeh: Tactics This time Oliver Reeh has brought together and provided training questions for a few examples of play which he has called “own goals”. Our contributor from Hamburg has also included a lot of his own (painful) experiences. In addition there is once more Reeh’s favourite combination in Chess Media Format.
Rainer Knaak: Opening trap New or as yet undiscovered traps are presented here, this time one from the Philidor Defence. In addition to that, Efstratios Grivas has contributed a trap from the Ruy Lopez Open Variation.
Karsten Müller: Endgames In the first text in Karsten Müller’s endgame column, you have access to seven endgame videos in Fritztrainer format (in German). The title of the second text is “Passed pawns and those which wish to become passed pawns”. It is followed by 23 games, including the solutions to the endgame positions on page 26.
Telechess The correspondence database for this issue was provided to us directly by the ICCF. It contains six texts with news and information and over 2500 games, mainly from complete tournaments.
Zugzwang This is the title of a new novel published by the Irish author Ronan Bennett. In it a role is played by the great tournament of St. Petersburg 1914. There is a video trailer, an interview, and an audio-clip of a reading as well as a little competition.
