In October 2008, the World Chess Championship is taking place in Germany. With reigning world champion Viswanathan Anand taking on Vladimir Kramnik, two intriguing personalities will be fighting for the crown.

The head-to-head duel follows on a tradition of over 120 years of great matches between famous grandmasters, such as chess legends Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Fischer, Karpov, and Kasparov.

The film Fighting for the Crown portrays the two opponents, Kramnik and Anand, and their style and shows how and why they have made it to the top. Friends, colleagues, managers, and their wives talk about these two outstanding players. And last but not least we will hear what they have to say about themselves and about each other.

Director Bernhard Pfletschinger and production company Schnittstelle Film und Video GmbH have accompanied Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand for almost two years. We see the titleholder from India and his Russian opponent at tournaments in Wijk aan Zee, Miskolc, Bonn, Mainz, and Dortmund.

Witness the encounter of two extraordinary characters with different philosophies and a common passion: chess.

The producer Dr. Bernhard Pfletschinger has been working since 1984 as a screenwriter and director of documentary films. He received numerous awards, among others the renowned German Adolf Grimme Prize.
