Following the success of Ideas Behind Modern Chess Openings, this comprehensive companion volume gives the complete opening repertoire for Black. A must for anyone who plays with Black pieces, these low-maintenance, easy-to-follow openings can be played from the very first move, enabling players to dictate the development of the game from a very early stage.

Against 1.d4 the author recommends playing 1...d5 followed by 2...Nc6 (the Chigorin Defence). Upon 1.e4 Black can again dictate the character of the opening from the very first moves by adopting the Scandinavian Defence, and after 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3, continuing with 3...Qd6 instead of the usual 3...Qa5. Black can then rapidly develop the forces by ...e6 or the brand new ...g6.
