STRATEGY OF KASPAROV PREVAILS IN NOVGOROD
The chef de cuisine of the restaurant of the Novgorod Beresta hotel showed great insight and foresight when he put veal `Strategy of Kasparov' and pancakes `Attack of Kramnik' on the menu. Indeed, the two top seeds ran the show. In the end the World Champion's strategy prevailed despite another upsetting loss against his direct rival.

DORTMUND: KRAMNIK AGAIN!
Although the poster announcing the 25th edition of the Dortmunder Schachtage only mentioned the names of Karpov, Anand and Judit Polgar, no one was surprised when the event was won by the man who had also dominated the previous two tournaments.

INTERVIEW: PETER SVIDLER
The deal was to talk about music not chess. But who wouldn't be tempted to surrep- titiously sneak in a couple of questions on chess when talking to a 21-year-old grandmaster who has just won the Russian championship for the third time in four years? (Yes, that one year he didn't play.)

ERICH ELISKASES
Hardly anybody still remembers that Erich Eliskases was the last top-notch Austrian chess player of the inter-war years or that for a time he was even considered a likely contender for the world title. Michael Ehn pays tribute to one of the great natural chess talents of this century who died at the age of 83 earlier this year.

ELISTA
Peter Svidler returned to Elista to do what he usually does in the Kalmykian capital: winning the Russian championship. The three-time champion himself reports on this heavily contested testcase for the knock-out world championship later this year.

MIGUEL NAJDORF REMEMBERED
Hans Ree remembers Miguel Najdorf, the legendary Polish-born Argentinian grandmaster, who passed away on July 4 at the age of 87.
