| ContentNIC’S CAFE LETTERS THE WINNER WANTS IT ALL Garry Kasparov returned to Wijk aan Zee and again he comfortably outclassed the opposition at the Corus Chess Tournament, the impressive sequel to 61 years of Hoogovens tournaments. In spite of his victory Kasparov left the windy seaside resort in a foul mood. Annoyed by the unpredictable outcome of the daily spectator’s prize the winner sensed that he was treated with a clear lack of respect. An extensive behind-the-scenes report with a wonderful selection of annotated games. IN THE SHADOW OF THE GIANTS Right next to the stage where Kasparov cum suis waged battle the twelve participants in the Corus B tournament competed for the right to play in the main tournament next year. Sergey Tiviakov describes how he managed to secure this much coveted spot. INTERVIEW: PETRA KORTCHNOI When she heard the news on the radio of Viktor Kortchnoi’s flight to the West back in 1976, a phrase from Schiller’s play The Robbers started ringing in her head: ‘This man has to be helped.’ Her wish to support the famous dissident signalled a dramatic turn in her already eventful personal history. In Wijk aan Zee, Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam saw an old wish fulfilled when he spoke to Petra Kortchnoi about her extraordinary life. PIKET BEATS KASPAROV TO WIN FIRST INTERNET GRAND PRIX A sensational victory over Garry Kasparov Himself won Jeroen Piket the $ 20.000 first prize at the KasparovChess Inaugural Grand Prix, the first top level chess tournament on the Internet. Immediately after the event we talked to the winner who cannot ‘think of any sport that can be better promoted or publicised on the Internet than chess’. A TALE OF TWO OPENS Sergey Dolmatov followed the example of quite a few fellow-’Soviets’ who are traditionally lured to the Opens in Linares and Ubeda at the beginning of the new year. In Linares our reporter took first place. In Ubeda he finished half a point behind Open specialist Artashes Minasian. TRAVELLING SALESMAN Hans Ree tells the tale of George Koltanowski, the legendary ‘showman’. Koltanowski died on February 5, after a brief illness, at the age of 96. Although a strong player, he will be first and foremost remembered as a popularizer of chess who was universally liked. SADLER ON BOOKS Matthew Sadler read four new books from the fertile Gambit publishers. OPENING NEWS FROM WIJK AAN ZEE Jan Timman takes a look at the harvest of new opening ideas from the Corus Tournament. CHESS NOTES |
