BLED OLYMPIAD
Led by an awesome Garry Kasparov, who celebrated his come-back to the greatest chess event in the world with a stunning 2933 performance, the Russian favourites steamrollered the opposition to claim the Hamilton Russell Cup. An on-the-spot report with great analyses by the winners and their rivals.
For four years the only news about Julio Granda Zuniga were disturbing rumours. Why did the enigmatic Peruvian leave chess? And why did he return? On the shores of Lake Bled he told Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam his amazing tale.
If the race for the gold medals in the men’s competition took a predictable course, the developments in the women’s Olympiad were truly mind-boggling. China won again, but they needed a few miracles. One of them was called Zhao Xue and that’s the new name you have to remember.

ANAND AND XU YUHUA AGAIN!
At the second FIDE World Cup in Hyderabad Vishy Anand and Xu Yuhua successfully defended their titles. Game notes by the champions and by the great hopes of Indian chess, Krishnan Sasikiran and Koneru Humpy, the youngest girl ever to claim the ‘men’s’ grandmaster title.

KRAMNIK-DEEP FRITZ
With superior positional play Vladimir Kramnik took an ostensibly decisive lead in his match against Deep Fritz in Bahrain. Alas, he proved only too human in the second half and a disappointing 4-4 draw was the result.

A FRESH START IN SELFOSS
If the signs do not deceive the future of Icelandic chess looks bright again.

GETTING THE ACS
What happens when a junior world champion is pitted against top grandmasters like Judit Polgar, Alexander Khalifman and Loek van Wely? Peter Acs will tell you.

ANNIVERSARY TOURNEY
Jan Timman presents the prize-winners of the study tourney that was held to celebrate his fiftieth birthday.
