NIC'S CAFÉ

YOUR MOVE

FEELING AT HOME
Familiar surroundings and a warm welcome by chess-loving friends. Those were the ingredients that once again inspired Jan Timman at the traditional Sigeman & Co tournament in Malmö. Initially mildly pessimistic about his chances, Timman regained his old optimism when on his arrival in Sweden the air appeared filled with lucky signs. He won his first three games and never looked back. The tournament winner reports.

ON THE ROAD
Although he's no longer a prodigy, but rather a strong world class grandmaster, Magnus Carlsen remains one of the hottest chess players around. Following the 16-year-old Norwegian's shared win in Sarajevo, Simen Agdestein describes what Magnus has been up to lately.

FEAR AND LOATHING IN CONNECTICUT
At the Foxwoods Open, Loek van Wely tied for first with Ilya Smirin and Eugene Perelshteyn. The Dutchman proved strongest in the blitz tie-break which earned him the title and a free hotel room for next year's edition.

WOOD GREEN STILL ON TOP OF 4NCL
The 2005-6 season of Britain's national league ended with a thrilling climax, as the two top teams, each boasting an average rating of well over 2600, faced off in a last round showdown.

BADEN-BADEN WINS BUNDESLIGA
Finally the Cinderella tale came true. A decade ago Baden-Baden started in the 5th division of the German Bundesliga with a clear plan in mind. Now, in their fourth year in the top division the star-studded team from this world-famous spa clinched the title.

THE GREATEST CHESS BOOK OF ALL TIME
'It might shock many chess aficionados to learn that my choice of "greatest chess writer" isn't Tal or Larsen', confesses best-selling author and chess book addict Jeremy Silman. In a passionate exposé he explains his choice.

XU YUHUA NEW CHESS QUEEN
At the knock-out women's world championship in Ekaterinburg, 29-year-old Xu Yuhua emerged as the successor to Antoaneta Stefanova. In the best-of-four final she only needed three games to defeat Alisa Galliamova of Russia to become the third Chinese World Champion after Xie Jun and Zhu Chen.

MY GAMBIT
'Here it is', writes Yury Razuvaev, 'the novelty of my entire chess career.'

AVERAGE RATING ON TOP BOARD AROUND 2700
Thanks to a seemingly endless reservoir at home and a long list of awe-inspiring mercenaries, the Russian club league may well be the strongest in the world. Vladimir Barsky travelled to Dagomys on the Black Sea and saw Ural claim the title.

ROWSON'S REVIEWS
Jonathan Rowson reflects on the approach he has chosen in his review column so far and what the reader may expect in the future.

CROOKED SMILE, TWINKLING EYES
Last year Hans Ree got a present: Viktor Kortchnoi's two DVDs, My Life for Chess. It took him a year to procure the equipment needed to watch them, but then the experience proved quite stimulating.

YOUNG AGES AND DARK AGES
Garry Kasparov muses about the alleged advantages of youth in blitz and paints a gloomy picture of the sad situation the chess world currently finds itself in.
