The Variation: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5.

Publisher's recommendation

This line is one of the oldest to combat the Sicilian Defence.

The line rose to prominence when Louis Paulsen, in his match at the First American Chess Congress in New York 1857, tried it against Paul Morphy. However, his score of 0,5 out of 4 was not encouraging and over the years the line sank into oblivion.

It took the eccentric mind of Michael Basman to put 4…Bc5 back onto the map again in the 1970s. Later, in 1997, Croatian International Master Srdjan Sale published an authoritative article about his experiences with this line in New In Chess Yearbook 45, which author Valeri Bronznik used as a starting-point for his comprehensive treatise of a line well-suited for club player and professional alike.
