If you don’t want to miss the latest news in your own favourite lines, if you are looking for inspiration, then the is vital for you, too. It refreshes your opening repertoire, four times a year!
Forum Readers from all over the world join in discussions on previous surveys. Titled players, correspondence players and club players shed their light on opening developments and search for the truth together. With contributions by Efstratios Grivas, Bogdan Lalic, Jose Vilela and many others.
Sosonko’s Corner In his Corner, Genna Sosonko gives a lecture on the origins of the ‘gambit’, spotting a new tendency for gambits to appear in ‘solid’ openings instead of the romantic ones of yore. A most striking example is his own pet Catalan, in which there have been some recent fireworks by the likes of Vladimir Kramnik and Jan Timman.
Book Reviews Glenn Flear does his own research on gambits, inspired by Nigel Davies’s new Gambiteer series! Parts I and II provide a hard-hitting repertoire for both colours. Some lines are too outrageous for a respectable grandmaster’s taste, but our reviewer navigates you with a steady hand through the waters stirred by expert Davies. He also examines Peter Wells’s book Grandmaster Secrets: The Caro-Kann, which delivers just what it promises: not ‘just another’ Caro-Kann book, but many useful insights in the professional’s mind. Finally, another ‘gambit’ book, the one on the Fabulous Budapest Gambit by Viktor Moskalenko. Flear deems this an inspiring work by an objective grandmaster, with many attractive extras.
