There are few opening books that do not lean heavily on the fashion of the day, but try to convey a general picture of an opening. Provided the author steers clear from superficial comments and platitudes, books of this type stand a better chance of surviving the test of time. Jonathan Rowson has written just such a book.

The enthusiastic Scotsman succeeds in whetting the reader's appetite for his favourite opening, the Grnfeld Indian. In fact, his monograph leaves very little to be desired. Elaborate explanation within the 36 master games, a recommended repertoire, a Grnfeld Quiz. All brought in an entertaining style.
