In memoriam Jan Timman (14 December 1951 – 18 February 2026)

February 19, 2026

It’s with great sadness that all of us at New In Chess are trying to cope with the passing away of Jan Timman, a wonderful colleague and dear friend.
Jan’s importance to New In Chess cannot be overstated. He was the magazine’s first editor in chief and always kept playing a pivotal role, contributing articles and annotated games, and giving advice on editorial matters till the very end.

Besides his work for the magazine, Jan was one of our most beloved book authors. He wrote countless classics in an endless outpour of creativity. His most recent titles include his best games collection Timman’s Triumphs (2020), The Unstoppable American (2021), Max Euwe’s Best Games (2023), 100 Endgame Studies You Must Know (2024) and Timman’s Studies (2025).
The latter titles focus on one of his great passions in his later years, the beauty of the endgame study.
New In Chess has been blessed that the magazine started out when Jan was one of the best and most successful players in the world and that his love for writing never waned.

In the next issue of New In Chess, we will pay tribute to Jan Timman and review his magnificent career as a world-class player, his legacy as a writer, and the fond memories he leaves behind as a friend.

For those who want to feel his love for chess in its many facets, there are his books and his contributions to the Magazine. If you’d like to hear his enthusiasm about chess studies and his wide and infectious knowledge of the world of studies, you can listen to the New In Chess Podcast that we recorded last December, Jan’s last official interview.

As a chess composer (my name is Peter Siegfried Krug), I knew Jan Timman as an official when he organized a chess study tournament every five years. Incidentally, he has over 542 chess studies listed in the current Harold van der Heijden database (2025).

I have every issue of New In Chess magazine in print, from 1985 to the present. I met Super GM Jan Timman in person at the 1981 Las Palmas International Tournament, which he won ahead of, among others, Korchnoi and Larsen. I once saw him enter the tournament venue, the "Reina Isabel," at midday, coming straight from swimming and sunbathing on Las Canteras beach, carrying a bucket and shovel of sand, with his little daughter (holding his other hand) and his wife, Elsa. A couple of hours later, the first round of a major tournament would begin, where he would later be crowned "King." My condolences to his family, and R.I.P., Jan Timman. The man is gone, but his legacy will always remain! ...
