About Popular Chess/Everyman Chess

Popular Chess has gone through quite a few shape shifting exercises over the years. Starting out as a part of Pergamon Press, then becoming Cadogan, Everyman Chess and finally, with the merger with Quality Chess and New in Chess in 2024, changing the name to Popular Chess for legal reasons.

A lot of our books are still in print as Everyman Chess, but all future prints and reprints will be under the imprint Popular Chess.

We focus on making easily accessible material for the majority of chess players. Our books have been instrumental in the launch of many chess careers.

Byron Jacobs has been the commissioning editor for Popular Chess for close to three decades. Jonathan Tait and Richard Palliser are our trusted freelance editors.

We have published some of the greatest players and writers in history, including Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Mikhail Tal, Alexander Khalifman and many more. The recent merger has given us a chance to reinvent the brand, while focusing on what was great about Everyman Chess. Our best years are definitely ahead of us!
