The Advance Variation is the most ambitious way to meet the solid French Defence. Its popularity among club players is not difficult to understand: by advancing the e-pawn to e5 on the third move, White not only gains space but also blocks in Black’s c8-bishop and hampers Black’s kingside development by taking away the f6-square.

Grandmaster Evgeny Sveshnikov has played the Advance Variation in countless games with excellent results and is, as former World Champion Anatoly Karpov puts it, ‘the world expert’ in this variation.

Together with his son, International Master Vladimir Sveshnikov, he has thoroughly improved, updated and expanded his earlier investigations that he presented in his first book on the French Advance in 2003. The Complete French Advance includes a lot of powerful new ideas.

The Sveshnikovs present many annotated grandmaster games, clearly explaining the ideas and plans for both sides. They also provide exercises and test positions in order to reinforce what has been learned.

After reading and studying this book, White players, from amateurs to Grandmasters, will be able to make their opponents’ lives even more difficult.

Anatoly Karpov:
"This, in my view, is a true textbook, original in conception and outstanding in execution."

Grandmaster Predrag Nikolic:
"If one day the truth about the game of chess would be revealed, I would not be surprised to learn that 3.e5 is the best reply to the French Defence.

Ian Marks, Chess Scotland:
"Not just a very good opening book, it’s a very good chess book, well written, well assembled (..) There’s more to it than just a bunch of Advance French games; there’s a lot of wisdom and instruction in it too (..) Recommended to those who defend the French, those who play, or are thinking of playing, the Advance, and to anyone just looking for a lot of interesting chess well explained."

International Master John Donaldson:
"There is plenty of prose explanation and the book is spiced up by exercises to solve and the elder Sveshnikov’s lively observations."

Grandmaster Glenn Flear:
"I found the In place of a conclusion to be an excellent section where the ‘state of play’ is laid out in a way that the reader can understand. One may not always agree with the author, but here you can see exactly what is the author’s opinion concerning a variation or various move orders. There are plenty of exercises, including some new ones, and the Indices are useful tools to find games and individual variations. The author has great experience with this variation and his writings are full of information that any student of the game can learn from."

CHESS Magazine (UK):
"Up-to-date and fairly weighty work (..) Those well acquainted with it may find many French players not quite so au fait with the resulting lines.”
