Jan Timman

Jan Timman (1951-2026) played a pivotal role in our company from the moment New In Chess was founded in 1984 till the very end of his life. Both as an editor of New In Chess Magazine (first as editor in chief, later as honorary editor) and as the author of many bestselling books, his contributions were immense. Timman's Titans won the 2017 ECF Book of the Year Award, and his recent books, The Longest Game, The Unstoppable American, Timman's Triumphs and Max Euwe's Best Games have all met with wide acclaim. Jan was a world-class player for decades and the most successful Dutch grandmaster since Max Euwe. He won practically all great tournaments around the world, played the 1993 FIDE World Championship match against Anatoly Karpov, and rose to second place in the world rankings in 1982. He was also an immensely productive study composer. His best studies appeared in Timman’s Studies, a monumental book that was published a few months before he sadly passed away.
